Holiday Poem

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
The kittens were squeaking
An old rubber mouse.

The wreath that was hung
So fine at the door
Is scattered in pieces
All over the floor.

The stockings lined up
In neat little rows
Now boast a small hole
In each of their toes.

The tree that had twinkled
Countless colorful whims,
Was now, although splendid,
Missing some limbs.

I catch them and hug them.
“Be good,” I insist.
They lick but leap off
To see what they’ve missed.

And now as I spy them
The thought comes to me,
That their’s is the spirit
That Christmas should be.

Should children and kittens
Yet show us the way,
And teach us the joy
That may come with this day?

Could they share the message
That’s written above,
And show us that, truly,
Christmas is love.
